Choosing an Interior Designer
With so many interior designers out there, choosing one can be a daunting process.
Here are 5 tips to finding the right person to help you create your dream home!
1. Be Specific About Your Requirements
The first step to choosing an interior designer is to know what you need from them! Write down some bullet points about the project before even starting to look for a designer – do you need help with furnishings only or do you need someone who can take on a more in-depth refurbishment project? Do you need someone to project manage for you? What would you like to spend? (This is a really important one – the designer will need to have some idea of what your budget is for a project so that they can meet your expectations and work within it.) Of course, some of your requirements may change following discussions with your designer but it is a good idea to have a bit of a brief in mind at the beginning so that you can start looking for people who will be able to help you in the way that you want.
2. Find Out What Their Style Is
Some interior designers have a particular “look” that they design to. Clients will choose these designers because they like their brand style and want something very similar. Other designers take a more bespoke approach and tailor each scheme to the individual client. Have a look through each designer’s portfolio and ask them what their approach is when designing.
3. Find Out How They Charge
There is no standard way interior designers fee for their work. Some charge an hourly rate, some work on a fee-per-room basis, some charge a percentage of the total project spend and some a fixed overall fee. Ask the designers you are considering for details of their fee structure and make sure you are comfortable with it before proceeding.
4. Ask Questions!
Interior designers are people too! Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you need to make sure that you have all the information you require before making your decision – after all, they are the experts! A good interior designer and someone who is going to be helpful and understanding throughout the design process will take the time to answer your questions at the initial stage.
5. Have a Meeting
The relationship with your interior designer is going to be an important one! They will have access to your home and will get to know many details about your personal life in order to create a home that meets your needs. It is important to meet anyone taking on such a key role before deciding to engage them so that you can make sure that you feel this is someone you can trust to invite into your life. Some designers will charge for an initial meeting, others offer a complimentary first appointment – make sure you clarify this with the designer before you meet!
