Escape to the Country

With house prices increasing exponentially in the capital, more and more people are making the move from London to the countryside.

As a country girl myself, I love the feeling of space and calm that the countryside brings.

Here are some of my favourite places to live in the areas that Vesta Design covers.

1. Bruton, Somerset

A small former market town between Yeovil and Frome, Bruton has been very much on the up in recent years. Already popular with celebrities and home to some excellent schools, including King’s Bruton boarding school, the appearance of the Hauser & Wirth art gallery, opened in 2014 has put Bruton firmly on the map, drawing in trendy crowds. Also attracting people to the town is At The Chapel – a stylish restaurant, bar and hotel on the high street.

The bordering hamlet of Cole is home to the stunning Cole Manor. With 5 bedrooms, additional annexe and outbuildings and 5 acres of land, this could be the perfect rural retreat. On the market with Lodestone Property (click on image for link).

2. Tetbury, Gloucestershire

Composed of picturesque Cotswold buildings, the gorgeous Tetbury is a true chocolate-box town. Located near to Prince Charles’ private residence, Highgrove, Tetbury has always attracted a slightly wealthier crowd, which has fed in to the town’s economy, allowing it to be kept in good condition and maintain its beauty. Packed with antique shops, independent boutique stores and gastro-pubs, Tetbury has plenty to offer to residents and visitors alike.

The Old Rectory in nearby Westonbirt, situated near to the popular arboretum, has been restored and refurbished by the current owners and boasts 8 bedrooms, stables, paddocks and landscaped gardens as well as an additional detached 2 bedroom coach house. 3. Stockbridge, Hampshire

With its name meaning literally “bridge over a river”, the town of Stockbridge in Hampshire is home to the oldest fishing club in England. With stores tailored to outdoor pursuits in amongst other independent shops, country gentle-folk should be find their requirements for leisure wear and equipment amply met.

This stunning red brick property is located in the heart of the pretty village of Nether Wallop close to Stockbridge. It has 4 bedrooms and 4 reception rooms with planning permission for a further garden room. The earlier part of the house is Grade II listed and it boast some beautiful period features. 4. Marlborough, Wiltshire

Rumoured to be the resting place of legendary wizard, Merlin, Marlborough is home to some excellent schools, both public and state, with Marlborough College in particular a favourite with the elite – the Duchess of Cambridge was a former pupil here.

The town itself is quintessentially English and the high street is filled with small shops, old coaching inns and pretty cafes.

Nearby Savernake Forest covering over 4,000 acres is filled with wildlife and ideal for weekend dog walks.

This Grade II* listed, 8 bedroom manor house is situated just 1.5 miles outside of the town in the neighbouring village of Ogbourne Maizey. With around 8.8 acres of land including outbuildings, stables, gardens and a paddock, this home offers a wealth of potential. On the market with Savills (click on image for link).

5. Burford, Oxfordshire

Another idyllic Cotswold town, Burford is composed of soft stone buildings interspersed with lots of greenery. Known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, Burford is a tiny place (home to under 2,000 residents) with cosy tea shops and lovely pubs. It is popular with celebrities too, several A-listers have country homes close by. This small but lively town is ideal for those wishing to live away from the hustle and bustle of the city whilst still maintaining access to it when desired - Oxford and Cheltenham are both close at hand.

On the Market

An exclusive development of 2 barn conversions and 4 new-build barn-style properties, Signet Hill Barns is ideal for those looking for the seclusion and character of rural life without compromising on modern conveniences. The houses have between 4 and 6 bedrooms each and the 5 bedroom home shown here features a double height entrance hall and large open-plan living / dining room, perfect for contemporary living.
